Ioulia Shukan
Ioulia Shukan is a sociologist and lecturer inSlavic studies at the Université Paris Nanterre. She specializes in politicala nd social mobilizations in Ukraine. After the publication of a book based on her ethnographic investigation into the Ukrainian protest mobilization of the winter of 2013-2014, Génération Maïdan : vivre la crise ukrainienne (Éditions de l'Aube, 2016), she has organized her research around numerous field trips inUkraine to monitor closely and consistently the ordinary forms of civic engagement in the face of the war in the Donbass, in eastern Ukraine, in particular that of Ukrainian women on the back-front. This was an opportunity for Ioulia Shukan to observe how women, through the care they brought to wounded soldiers of this armed conflict, informally contribute to building the common good.
Over the years, Ioulia Shukan has developed and enriched her intimate knowledge of the Ukrainian terrain and its actors, which has allowed her to gain notoriety in the French media, where she shares her fine and nuanced analyses of the transformations of Ukrainian society in and through the war, as well as of citizen resistance since the Russian military aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022. She is fluent in French,English, Ukrainian and Russian.
