At a time when disrupted travel (wars, epidemics), economic realities and environmental disasters are forcing us to reconsider our ways of traveling, Aude Vidal points out our great ambivalence on this subject and the ecological, cultural and social damage we cause, both abroad and at home, when we satisfy our “need for elsewhere”. If thinking about modern tourism and travel means thinking about an “economy of surplus” that privileges the desires of some at the expense of the needs of others, it also means tackling the inequalities that undermine our societies and those that continue to grow between societies.
